Earn Rewards, Save the Environment With Nuride

If you're looking for a way to save money, help the environment and earn rewards, then check out Nuride. I stumbled upon their web site doing research for this blog and it caught my attention. Here' what you get: rewards when you walk, bike, telecommute, carpool, take the train, subway, or bus, or work a compressed week.  NuRide offers these services in many urban areas around the United States and has partnered with lots of businesses to conserve energy and to reduce pollution and traffic congestion.
Here's how it works:

1. Take Greener Trips
Telecommute from home, bike to a friend's house, ride the train, or carpool with other NuRide members.

2. Record Your Trips
Record your greener trips in your NuRide account and track the money you save, the emissions you prevent, and your NuRide points.

3. Get Rewards
Redeem your points for restaurant coupons, retailer discounts, and tickets to shows & attractions.
So far, I've recorded two bike trips and received rewards for sports tickets.
I got so excited about the service, I recorded myself riding the Columbia Tap Trail to the market. Take a look!

It's free and easy to do!  To sign up visit www.nuride.com  Feel free to drop me a line and tell me what you think!

Cool Valentine's Gifts for Cyclists

Valentine's Day is coming up and that means a lot of love will be flowing!  On this day people throughout the world express their love with gifts that range from romantic cards, beautiful flowers, and heart shaped boxes filled with candy.  But as I was browsing the web the other day looking for outdoor stuff, I ran across some really neat gifts for cyclists and golfers.  Sites such as Cafe Press offer great gifts at reasonable prices, some under $100.

Safey Tips For Cycling At Night

Cycling is so much fun for me!  I ride for pleasure, as a form of exercise, as well as for transportation such as running errands, etc.  Although I ride mostly during the day, sometimes darkness catches me on a long commute/ride.  When that happens, I'm prepared!
Here's how:

Light It Up
Not you, but certainly your bike.  Front, back, sideways, anywhere on your bike. I use clip on blinking LED lights at all times, which makes me more visible to motorists and pedestrians.

Off The Beaten Path
When traffic is busy, try to find side streets that are less congested.  Your ride might take longer, but you'll reduce the risk of an accident.  Also use crosswalks instead of riding through the turn lane.

Be Visible
Make sure your clothing has plenty of reflective details so motorists can see you in traffic.  Also place reflective decals to both sides of your rims, shoes and helmet.

Always follow the local bicycle laws in your state and always wear a helmet.  Happy riding!
